Rutherford County Schools (RCS) has announced additional revisions to the 2013-2014 school calendar as a result of weather related closures this winter.

At the March meeting of the RCS Board of Education, Dr. Janet Mason announced that April 18, 2014 and June 12, 2014 would be student instructional days as a result of weather related school closures.  Dr. Mason also shared that district administrators and school principals were considering extending the school day by 30 minutes to make up additional time missed due to inclement weather.  District leaders explored this option to avoid eliminating spring break or having school on Saturdays.  Although RCS has utilized those options in the past, and may have to consider them in future years, both choices remain unpopular with students, employees, and families.

Since the March Board of Education meeting, district leaders have explored the advantages and disadvantages of using the extended day option and have worked to minimize any negative effects of implementing this option.

In order to make up the additional desired instructional hours, RCS will extend the school day for students by 30 minutes per day, effective April 28, 2014 – June 12, 2014.
This option will allow the recovery of 16.5 hours without holding school on Saturday, or eliminating time from the scheduled spring break, or holding school on Memorial Day.

Prior to the current school year, extending the school day to make up time was not an option due to the state laws governing school calendars. For many years, North Carolina required school calendars to include 180 student days AND a minimum of 1,025 instructional hours. Effective for the 2013-2014 school year, that requirement was changed to 185 student days OR a minimum of 1,025 hours. This legislative change now allows school districts to meet either standard.

In total, Rutherford County Schools lost 45 hours due to weather related closures. This makeup plan restores 34.5 hours to the 2013-2014 school calendar. While there is no perfect solution, this plan satisfies the requirements of the law, restores valuable instructional time, and balances the needs of students, families, employees, and community partners.

The revised school calendar is now posted on the RCS website at www.rcsnc.org.  School principals and district leaders appreciate the cooperation of staff, students, and families in working together through the changes resulting from this unusual winter.
